Suffix and Prefix

Suffix

A letter or group of letters which we add to the ending of word to change the meaning or function of the word is called Suffix. There are many suffixes used in the English language to create a rich vocabulary.  These are described below.

Rules of Suffix: 
1. When the suffix begins with a vowel then drop the 'e'
  Example: Like+ing= Liking

2. When the suffix starts with a consonant then keep the 'e'
  Example: Use+ful= Useful
3. When the word ends in 'ce' or 'ge' keep the 'e' when adding 'able' or 'ous'
  Example: Service+able= Serviceable
4. When there is a 'y' before a consonant then transfer the 'y' into 'i' before adding suffix.
  Example: Beauty+ful= Beautiful

5. When the suffix starts with 'i' then keep the 'y'
  Example: Worry+ing= Worrying
6. When the word is one syllable long and ends in a consonant with one vowel before it then double the last letter.
  Example: Drop+ed= Dropped

7. If the word is one syllable long and ends with two consonant in a row then don't double the last letter.     
  Example: Wash+er= Washer

Prefix

A letter or a group of letters which we add to the beginning of a word to make a new word with a 
different meaning is called prefix. It can create a opposite meaning of the main word. There are many
prefixes in English language. These are described below.
