Verb
Verb is a word as well as a part of speech that describes what the subject of a sentence is doing.
Rule-1:
If the subject of a sentence is a singular number then the verb will be singular. If the subject is plural then the verb will be plural in the sentence.
Example: We are very happy.
He is a student.
Rule-2:
If two or more than two subjects connect with "and" then the verb will be plural in sentence.
Example: Tom and David are two brothers.
He and his friends have just arrived.
Rule-3:
If two similar kinds of noun connect with the word "and" and they also bear same meaning then the verb will be singular in the sentence.
Example: Bread and butter is my favourite food.
slow and steady wins the race.
Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy.
Rule-4:
If different number or subject of person connects with "and" then verb will be plural.
Example: You, he and I are friends.
You and I would enjoy cycle riding.
You and he are birds of a feather.
Rule-5:
(One of, either of, each of, neither of) If any of these are in a sentence, then noun will be plural but verb will be singular in the sentence.
Example: One of the students was ill.
Neither of these two men is to be trusted.
Rule-6:
(Together with, along with, in addition to, including to, as well as, accompanied by) If any of these phrase remain in a sentence then verb will follow the subject which remains before of phrase.
Example: He as well as his two brothers is a skillful cricketer.
Sumon as well as Rana knows it.
Rule-7:
Verb of relative pronoun always follow the antecedent.
Example: It is I who am a student.
It is you who are to be blame.
It is he who is to be blame.
Rule-8:
(Anybody, anyone, somebody, someone, anything, something, everybody, everyone, nobody, nothing, whoever, whatever, everything) If any of these remains in a sentence as subject then verb will singular.
Example: Something was under the house.
Anybody who has lost his ticket should report to the desk.
Nobody writes well than you.
Rule-9:
If (distance, money, time, weight) any of these uses as subject in a sentence, then we have to use singular form of verb.
Example: Two miles is a long distance.
10 million dollars is a lot of money.
Five years is a long time to spend.
Rule-10:
something that become a set with two, If the word 'Pair" is mentioned in a sentence with it, then we have to use singular form of verb. If the word "pair" is not mentioned then we have to use plural form of verb in the sentence.
Example: A pair of pants is in the drawer.
This pair of scissors is dull.
