Tag Question

 

What is Tag question?

ans: Tag question is a statement or mini question that we can use for confirmation.

 

We need to know for tag question: 

1. If the left side of a sentence is negative, The right side will be positive.

2. If the left side of a sentence is positive, The right side will be negative.

3. We need to use same tense in both part of a sentence.

4. The uses of auxiliary verb is depended on tense and person

5. subjective pronoun is used in a tag question, according to the number and person of first part of a sentence.


Rule-1 

Same auxiliary verb will be used in the both part of a sentence according to tense.

Example:  I am a student, ain't I?

                  My father is a doctor, Isn't he?

                  They are playing football, aren't they?


Rule-2

Same modal auxiliary verb will be used in the both part of a sentence according to tense.

Example:  You will help her, Won't you?

                 We had better go, Shouldn't we?

                 The work can be done, Can't it? 


Rule-3

If we need to tag a question by using main verb, firstly we have to detect do/does or did according to the person and tense.

Example:  Samsul goes to office, doesn't he?

                 We don't play football, do we?

                 He teaches us English, doesn't he?

 

Rule-4 

If an imperative sentence uses as a positive statement, Then will/won't/can/can't/would/could any of these can be used for tag question. But we have to use will you/can you or may you if an imperative sentence deals with negative statement.

 Example:  Open the door, won't you?

                  Don't do it, will you?

 

Rule-5 

If a sentence consists of proposal like let's/ let us, then we need to use shall+we for tag question.

Example:  Let's go for a walk, Shall we?

                 Let's discuss about our aim in life, Shall we?
